Jeff Langkau, the art director of Civic.com Magazine wanted an Environmental Portrait of John Kelly for the December 1999 cover story about "The Y2K Silver Lining" - How government is preparing for Y2K, upgrading systems, etc.... to illustrate the idea of "The Silver Lining of Y2K" . . . I thought, "why not line the inside of his jacket with foil" - which seemed to worked pretty good.

I used a Hosemaster TurboFilter to create the blur on the foil (The TurboFilter spins a triple diffusion-effect disc in front of the lens, with the 3 areas being sharp, soft and super soft -- so the sharp part is syncronized to the main light on the subject's face, the soft part syncs to the edge light, and the super soft syncs to the foil exposure). Frankly the unit is a bit of a pain to use, because the fastest shutter speed it syncs with is 1/30th of a second, so it's not that practical to use outside (which is where we shot this portrait), as the exposure is 1/30th at f/22 for 100 asa film -- so that's a lot of strobe power.

Shot with Hasselblad ELX, 50mm lens, f/22 @ 1/30th, 81B filter on the lens, Fuji RAP 100 asa film.

John Kelly is very tall -- at least 6' 5" tall.
